Pomona is a dark, surreal play set in a decaying urban landscape centered around a mysterious concrete island in Manchester.

The story follows Ollie, a young woman searching for her missing twin sister. Her quest pulls her into a disturbing underworld populated by damaged and morally ambiguous characters, including a security guard, a sex worker, and a games master obsessed with role-playing games.

As Ollie investigates, the boundaries between reality and fiction begin to dissolve. The narrative structure is nonlinear, weaving in and out of time, and revealing a sinister network involving human trafficking, violence, and exploitation. The deeper Ollie goes, the more fragmented the world becomes, creating an atmosphere of paranoia and dread.

McDowall uses genre-blending elements - horror, noir, and dystopia- to explore themes of societal decay, loss of innocence, and the hidden systems perpetuating suffering. Pomona is ultimately a haunting meditation on the darkness beneath modern life and the illusions we use to cope with it.

AFTER LIFE

Directed by Andrew Pritchard | Written by Hirokazu Kore-Eda, Adapted by Jack Thorne
Performed at the Farnham Maltings on 5th + 6th February, 2025

AFTER-LIFE_CastPoster_2025.jpg

After Life, adapted by Jack Thorne from the film by Hirokazu Kore-eda, is a poignant and imaginative play set in a metaphysical waystation between life and the afterlife.

The story centers around recently deceased individuals who must choose a single memory to take into eternity. A group of caseworkers - souls who remain behind to help others - guide them through this emotional process, encouraging reflection and honesty.

Each character grapples with the complexity of memory, identity, and meaning as they sift through their lives to find a moment that defines them. The play reveals how difficult it can be to choose just one experience to represent a lifetime, often uncovering regrets, unresolved trauma, or unexpected joy.

Thorne's adaptation is tender, theatrical, and deeply human. After Life explores grief, memory, and the beauty in ordinary moments, ultimately celebrating the significance of even the smallest experiences.

THE ANTIPODES

THE ANTIPODES

Directed by Andrew Pritchard | Written by Annie Baker
Performed at the Farnham Maltings on March 22nd + 23rd, 2025

Antipodes_CharacterPoster_Sam_COMPRESSED.jpg

The Antipodes is a mysterious and darkly comic play set in a corporate conference room where a group of writers or creatives are tasked with generating stories.

Under the leadership of the enigmatic Sandy and his assistant Sarah, the team shares personal anecdotes, myths, and increasingly surreal tales in pursuit of an undefined goal. The setting never changes, intensifying the sense of claustrophobia and existential drift.

As the sessions drag on, time begins to blur—days stretch endlessly, and the outside world fades into irrelevance. The characters’ stories grow stranger, more intimate, and more disturbing, revealing fears, desires, and deep uncertainties. The nature of the project remains unclear, and the line between storytelling and reality dissolves, leaving both characters and audience questioning purpose and truth.

Annie Baker uses minimalist structure and elliptical dialogue to explore themes of creativity, meaning, and the human need for narrative. The Antipodes is a haunting, thought-provoking examination of storytelling itself.
